Is Combing Your Hair Too Harsh?
Jan 11th 2012, 05:09

Is combing natural hair too much manipulation, even while it's wet? Some people complain of hair breakage, although their hair care routines are pretty simplified. They don't do a lot of the common things that lead to breakage -- too much heat styling, rough handling, etc., so it can be perplexing to see hair breaking off.

Depending on your hair texture, daily combing (even with a wide tooth comb) may in fact be too harsh. What to use instead?

Your fingers!

Your fingers are much gentler on delicate tresses, but you still have to be careful not to pull and break the hair with rushed handling. Just as you would with a comb, begin detangling at the bottom of the hair and work your way up to the scalp, working out tangles with your hands. Not only will this benefit your hair, it's also a good way to become more familiar with your texture.

If you don't have a breakage problem, then by all means continue to use the comb of your choice. If, on the other hand, you've been wondering why your hair breaks off so easily despite your best TLC, try letting your fingers fill in for a comb at least a few times a week.
