Update: Since first publishing this blog post about 18 months ago, readers have been steadily weighing in with their opinions, so thank you! In case you missed it the first time around, I wanted to re-post this with all comments in order to help you make an informed decision. Original post follows...
The Dominican blowout isn't new, but salons that offer the service are expanding beyond big metropolitan areas like New York and Chicago. Nowadays, you don't necessarily have to live in the big city to find a stylist who specializes in this technique.
What makes a Dominican blowout so special?
Women who've had the service and love it rave about how straight and bouncy their hair is after a blowout. It can be tough to get your hair bone straight and feathery-light at home, especially if you're not proficient with a round brush and a two-hand technique.
On the flip side, I've heard some women say their hair was damaged after one of these blowout sessions. There's a lot of heat, and in many cases, a lot of pulling involved to get the hair perfectly straight.
So is the old school method of stove-heated irons better? Or is the Dominican blowout the way to go? And how are the lower prices typically found at Dominican salons affecting traditional black salons?
This is a big debate going on in the hairstyling industry, with plenty of opinions on either side.
What say you? I've never had a Dominican blowout (thought about it, but finding a salon where I live is a no-go) so I can't compare the two. If you have, I'd love to hear what you think!
